Surface Sounds
Photography II - CD Booklet
KALEO’s “Surface Sounds” is a soulful, folk-infused rock album that I chose when charged with redesigning the CD booklet of an already existing album. The small booklet often found in the front of CD cases typically contains the album’s imagery, song lyrics, and artist information. To visually interpret the music of this album, I took into account its themes of anxiety, resilience, and personal struggle.
Photography
I wanted to formulate a series of images that portray the overall “feel” and mood of the album. By laying a mirror flat on the ground and covering its surface with water, I was able to capture portrait images that display the movement and ripples of the water. This effect resulted in distorted photos of varying clarity, that capture the dark beauty and intriguing quality of the music.
Typographic Iterations
I experimented with both handwritten text and digital typefaces. Ultimately, I used a combination of both in the final.
